Presentation of THE AWARD FOR SPECIAL SERVICE TO THE HISTORICAL PROFESSION to the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training (ADST) Oral History Program

Please join SHFG on Thursday, November 3, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a special award presentation and virtual lecture to recognize the achievements of the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training (ADST) and its Foreign Affairs Oral History Program. The Society is pleased to present ADST with an award for Special Service to the Historical Profession.

Susan Johnson, president of ADST and retired senior Foreign Service officer, will share the story of the ADST Oral History Program’s three-plus decades of work, over which it collected more than 2,500 interviews with U.S. diplomats—the largest diplomatic oral history collection of its kind in the world. The archive includes interviews with, among others, former ambassadors, retirees from the Foreign Service, USAID, and USIA, and with Foreign Service Nationals and Foreign Service spouses. This treasure trove of personal accounts, including such notables as Prudence Bushnell, Thomas Pickering, and Julia Child, provides scholars and historians of U.S. foreign relations with an invaluable resource, offering unique insights on personal interplay and debates among U.S. policy makers and on the importance of U.S. diplomacy in serving the nation’s interests.

Congratulations to the ADST Oral History Program!

We look forward to fascinating stories and a lively discussion during this virtual lecture on November 3.

Registrants will receive a zoom link in their confirmation email.
